PostSubject: Insurance auctions   Tue Aug 21, 2012 11:52 am

Back when I got my 2011 S, the XPs had just come out. The duner guys were excited as heck about them but there was no concensus on how they would perform in the Eastern hills. Well, I think the jury is back and after watching how well they have performed, I've started scheming on how I could get one in my stable. My first thought was to just start riding balls to the wall since my S is fully insured, but I still like it enough to keep it around. I still also have my Rhino for my wife to ride, but she would be sooooooo much more comfortable in the S. What I could get out of the Rhino wouldn't come close to what I would have to pay for an XP, unless I got an XP from an insurance auction. Then it would only be a matter of investing a few more thousand $, and a good bit of time to rebuild it. My question is if any of y'all have had any experience with these auctions, and what specific weak links should I look for on a totaled XP. I've seen a few that have had collisions and is mostly front-end damage, and I've seen a few that have been rolled with messed-up cages. The plan was to scrap a lot of the suspension and possibly the cage anyway for aftermarket parts so it seems to make sense. Maybe Orangecrush can chime in because of his professional experience?

my dad always keeps an eye on them for me. 9 times out of 10 they still go for way too much. I think he uses govdeals and cranky ape. There are alot of repos that come through but like I said most of them go for more than what you could find one on craigslist for. I almost got a steal on a rzr 4 last month and in the last day it went from 7,000 to 14,000 in 4 hours so i said to hell with that. Never hurts to keep your eyes open!

Yeah, I've watched govdeals for a while and the stuff on there is either junk or goes for fair market value plus. Not really deals on ATVs there. I have a buddy that has a dealer license and goes to a lot of car auctions. However he has zero clue on motorsports stuff. His suggestion was to watch and see what the ones I'm looking at go for and then decide if it would be doable. I'm thinking that if I can look at it in person, see how extensive the damage is, add up cost of parts, and still come in under 9 or 10 grand, it would make sense. Why wait to see what it sells for if he can bid online after I look at it and give him my maximum bid.

Was that on a buy back pit dog? So do they set a reserve at auction 10% higher than buy back? One would think that if the reserve were set too high on all units then they would never sell. If they do then who's buying them?

I had a great ins guy,he said you would nor believe what they sell for. Bids start at 40% of what they pay out. All plastic was broken, frame bent, front a-arm area, one head lite and radiator. By the time you fix them it would cost $$$. Also a salvage title.

Don't think you will have much luck.. I had this same idea when I was looking for my wife a RZR. Best I can figure there are lots of guys with a little money and skills but can't do math.. Cause those machines go for way to much.. Heck with hers I had tons of stock parts.. A full long travel kit with shocks and axles sitting in the barn.. Also had a cage for 150... Even with that I couldn't make it worth my time.. I mean you will see a machine that you can get new for 13k.. It will have 3k+ worth of damage and the stupid thing will sell for 10k or 11k. Why anyone would bother rebuilding a machine for nothing is crazy... The other thing you need some wiggle room.. Really a lot of wiggle room. Cause there is no telling what you will find once you pull the plastics off or go to start it...

You would probably be better off just keeping an eye out for damaged machines from people with no insurance..

I watched three auctions online yesterday on some wrecked machines. They were all being sold by insurance companies with salvage titles. The first was a 2012 Commander 1000 with basically all front-end damage. It had less than 200 miles and sold for $7225. The second was a 2011 RZR xp900 in Nashville. It had 500 miles and just front-end damage to the right fender/headlight area. Wouldn't surprise me if the frame was bent around the radiator support but it would run and drive. It had a roof and Pro Armor doors and sold for $9700. The last one was one I really had my eye on. It was a 2012 Voodoo Blue RZR xp900 in Columbia, SC. It had 98 miles on the odometer but had it's right front wheel ripped off, bent up rollcage, and radius bar damage to the right rear. It would start and run but couln't be driven with the front a-arms looking like spaghetti. Sold for 8 grand to someone from Russia or something.

Just for shits and giggles I stopped by a local dealership on Wednesday. One of the owners went to grade school with me and the other has been a client and friend for at least ten years. They just happened to be uncrating a new Orange Madness XP 900 with power steering. I was quoted $16,300 OTD. Of course they said that was the buddy price but it at least gives me a point to shoot for in calculating what I should pay to buy a wreck.

That's a really nice price there. Taxes included in that? I was at my dealer today and the feller I was talking with didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. It kind of pissed me off so I just left.

Yeah, I thought it was a really good price too. It's just not something that is going to be easily doable right now. Money is flowing out of my pocket like a seive. My wife's car has 175k miles on it and she wants a new(er) one. And we are getting ready to start construction on a new animal hospital with a boarding kennel in the next couple of months. Also my neighbor just sold a Country Clipper ZTR mower to me yesterday and we just started both boys in preschool. I really should be happy with what I have for now and wait a year to see what happens. Who knows? Maybe this Yamaha sport model rumor has merit too.
