I don't want a pull-behind or cargo conversion. I can't afford a full-blown Toyhauler R/V. Why would something like this not work? Anybody know anything about the 7.4 Vortec motors or the Allision transmissions? Just from the economic standpoint. A few windows, door, A/C, awning, lights, fold down beds. You could be all -in for less than 10k.

Allison is the best transmission ever made .........that would work .I like being able to unhook from my toy hauler and run to store or whatever .it really just depends on what you want jimbo.
and I have around 10k in my hauler.you just have to shop for a nice one and have a truck to pull it .I have a 2000 f250 with a 7.3 that snatches it down the road very well .

This is just a 17-footer. 24 to 26 would be ideal with my ever-growing ATV riders (son and friends) group. I understand what you are saying Craig about being able to go into town if needed tho. That is something to consider.

That's another issue. I don't want to have to buy another truck, which I would have to.

I think Bush had the bigger Vortec once. Most of us have had the 6.0 Vortec and got great usage out of them. Just bad on gas. The Allison transmission is what GM has put in Silverado's with the Duramax Diesel engines. No issues.

i had a 02 silverado 3500 with the 8.1 and allison 5 speed. my dad has it now. pulled great just sucks the gas. 10-12 empty. 6-7 loaded. but i never seen a 7.4/454 with an allison. the 454 get worse mpg than the 8.1. would make great hauler. but most of those trucks only have seating for 2 and the whole packing up if you have to run to town.

It would be the school bus /medium duty truck Allison, dime a dozen. Good tranny, hard shifts. Remember there is more than one Allison transmission. It's more like a brand name of transmissions. Fords are called ZF.
It's like Valeo, Visteon, Delphi. Divisions of the big three.
Here up north it used to equal $ - jobs. Now it equals brownfield factories. Sad

FYI, IMO- The 454 (7.4) was the best gas engine for pulling before the turbo diesels came on the scene. 366 was more durable, but slower.

I went and drove one today. Kinda doggy even empty and the shifting was pretty harsh but really was not a bother. No more room than single-cab F-150 in the front, which I expected..The son was all about "can I ride in the back". Typical boy....So scratch this idea.....

i was looking at a ambulance on a call the other day and thought it would make a cool camper. it was a chevy duramax/allison 4 door with a huge box. i could stand up in it easy. tons of room. dont know if a sxs would fit in the back but you could tow it.
