New Trailer Question Empty
PostSubject: New Trailer Question   New Trailer Question EmptyThu Feb 05, 2015 10:43 am

Ok guys I am in the market for a new trailer since we now have a new 2015 RZR 1000 this means it is longer than the old 800. The new one and the Jagged X will not fit on our 20 foot trailer any longer. So here is the question: I have a 1014 F150 to pull with but I don't know whether to go with a 24 foot flat bed or a 26 + vnose enclsoed trailer. Any input would be great.

A 26' v-nose is going to be pretty heavy. I know the F-150 is rated to tow that much, but I'm not sure I'd put my truck through that. I destroyed the planetary gearset in mine towing a 5000# boat, and I'm not sure if Ford fixed those issues between 2008 and 2014. A flatbed is going to be significantly lighter.

Are you interested in selling the 20' trailer?  I have kinda been looking for something a little bigger.

That was what I was thinking to but I wanted someone who has had one to chime in on the topic... Thanks

I pull a 20ft vnose with a ram 1500 and it does pretty decent besides the fuel mileage which is expected, but I wouldn't wanna go any bigger than 20ft with a 1/2 ton truck. 26ft and 2 machines would be pretty hard on one.

I had a 24" and pulled it with a 2012 chevy 1500 and it was all it wanted. With 2 buggies in it it woulda been a handful. Gas mileage was about 7mpg. Pulled it a couple times then traded it in on bigger truck.
Just sold my 24' trailer last week.

3.5 eco boost. The motor is not what I am worried about it is the tranny and the overall suspension and handling.

Well the tranny in those are really good. You can pull about whatever you want with that motor. That motor is awesome and is a pullin mochine!

PostSubject: Re: New Trailer Question   New Trailer Question EmptyMon Feb 09, 2015 10:31 am

Don't really know much about ford echo boost. But an 8.5x26+ Vnose enclosed is a big load for a half ton.. My enclosed is 7x24+v. I pulled it pretty good bit with my 5.7L Tundra. Tundra is a beast though, transmission cooler, big brakes, 12" rear end, 4.30 gears in the rearend. ect. Even with that truck it was a decent load. The trailer could and would push the truck around a little and it would down shift like crazy climbing hills. Trailer brakes are also really important. I would have to set mine just right. If I changed what I was hualing I would have to adjust the brake settings to dial it back in. Now same trailer with my duramax and I've forgot to plug the trailer and and never noticed till it got dark and I had no running lights. This truck will pull the same load up the same mountains with out hunting for gears, hell with out changing gears. And I've never felt my trailer trying to push this truck down hills.

Anyway point is. It will probably pull it ok. You will probably be pushing it though on stability and brakes. Heght and width also make a big difference on pulling not just weight. I've pulled flat beds with much heaver tractors then my camper with that same tundra and it felt much more stable and lighter then a box trailer running 70 on the interstate.

Wise choice Chad, been there done that. Pulled our 28' enclosed with two buggies with our F150 5.4L for a couple years. Power wise it was not an issue but stability was marginal towing 10-12k lbs. The 150 is rated for that weight but it took a toll on it, finally tore out the rearend as you know. What brand did you get?

I pulled that work&Play with my F150 to Utah and back, made a few runs to Az, while I was out there...pulled it several trips up and down I-75....went thru Black Mountian NC with it.....trailer Weighs somewhere in the 13,000 neighborhood when it was all loaded up.....So roll with it!.....I tried all the weight balancer bars....removed all that crap and ran a sway bar only.

One of my buddies has the air bag system from Firestone on his f150 ecoboost and it tows awesome. Handles great too. Just make sure trailer brakes work well which I'm sure u would anyways. His truck doesn't dip at all in the back with his big enclosed with the bags.

I run Firestone bags on my 2500. I also had them on my tundra. I've also installed them on my dads last couple trucks. Honestly I''m not sure I'd own a truck with out them.. Huge difference in ride when hauling. Not to mention I can shove a pallet of what ever in the bed and not ride down the road with front end trying to come off the ground..

I have a 2013 F 150 with the Ecoboost, but i also have the heavy duty towing package which might make quite a bit of difference if you don't have it it's a special option

Mine had the HD tow package and towed decent don't get me wrong. But when you regularly (25K+ miles) put 12K+ behind it I could tell the tranny was going to go and the rearend did let go @140K miles. The factory sway control and HD tow package works well at those weight at 65mph and under, anything over that mph and stability suffers. For over 20 years while racing I've towed 28' enclosed trailers with a Suburban, 1500HD (2500 chassis w/350), & a F150. The 150 by far was the best, but in hind sight it was still lacking. When you get over 10k lbs the game changes. Now with the F250 pulling a 44' 15k+ I never even know it's behind me no matter how fast I run down the highway or over the mountains Laughing
