Duramax DOWN Empty
PostSubject: Duramax DOWN   Duramax DOWN EmptySun Jan 08, 2017 7:32 pm

The temps here have been near zero chill factor for a while. I let the Duramax get down to 1/2 tank. It sits a week or two sometimes. I did drive it about 6 days ago when the weather was in the 50's or higher. Took it out yesterday after it warmed up for 20 minutes or so. As soon as I hit the interstate about 4 miles from home, it shut down and would not start. I figured with the temps and me letting the fuel sit below 3/4 of a tank, the fuel filter or something gelled up.

Anyone ever have to use a treatment to fix this? It is suppose to warm up to the 40's tomorrow. I can add a treatment after it starts or warm up the barn with the torpedo heater first. I just don't want to have it towed home again.

howes treatment, if you are using it and the truck wont run because of fuel jell, they will pay the toll ! they also  have a winter thaw for jelled fuel. pour it in and turns the fuel back to a liquid. most problems are at the fuel filter. when I change my filters I fill them with howes,  cleans injectors , runs smoother. I dump 1/2 bottle in every other fill.  I buy this by the case  . start out the winter with new filters also helps. this seems to work for me. never  ben down for fuel problems.

I use Lucas treatment every other fill up. But I think that is only for cleaning. I now have Lucas Gel treatment. It is 39 degrees this afternoon and continuing to warm up overnight through the next few days. I think I will torpedo heater the barn and if it starts I will just add the Lucas then probably use the Howes like Pushrod says. I saw that at Pilot yesterday. I also saw the one Bush has listed. I should have never let the fuel run down to only 1/2 of a tank.

Change the fuel filter and add treatment in the filter like Mike said.  Could be water in the fuel or filter or just sucked some air.  Any engine codes?
My truck sets most of the time but has always started even at 0 and at 1/4 tank. I always try not to let it not get much below that. And I have never used the block heater

It still would not start with 55 degrees today. I went to prime the filter and found the plastic moisture drain and valve at the bottom is leaking fuel bad. I have to change the filter for sure.

That's what you get for owning a Chevy roflmao

There are several companies that make fuel treatment to prevent diesel from gelling and also fixes if it already has gelled.

I bought new and changed out the fuel filter, the mount and the water separator. Had to keep priming but she started. Run it down the interstate at high speed and back roads. Doing good. Put in the anti gel only, since it started now that it has been in the 60's.
