No doubt that it is hard for a company to engineer performance and durability into an ATV or Sidexside and bring it to the consumer at a price they can live with. Yamaha and Honda do shine in durability but are mediocre at performance. Polaris, Kawasaki, and Can-Am shine at performance but suffer at durability. I am anxious to see the long term durability of the Arctic Cat 1000. They have beefed it up and it seems to look on the surface as a good machine, but.........$24,000 affraid It will be interesting to see how the market evolves from here. With an ATV, people tend to put more emphasis on performance when they are spending $7000, but when they are spending $11,000 they tend to want reliability. This will be a definate challenge for manufacturers.

Reliability is definitely Honda all the way. This is my first Yammy so we will see how they stack up. Polaris definitely is hit and miss. I have seen guys with tons of miles on Sportsmans, but then I have seen some that are always in the shop. Kawi, I cannot really say anything about the newere BF and TERYX, but I had a 300 Bayou that was tougher than nails. I abused the crap out of that thing and it still kept coming back for more.

LT , its funny you mention that. I had a 300 Bayou. and it was the
worse 4wheeler i ever had. it ran good. but i had to have the starter
rebuilt about 6 times it 2 years.. 😢 I think water would get in it somehow.
and the thing eat brakes like going out of style. I got rid of it. and
got me a suzuki king quad. it was the older model of what you have.
it was a pretty good machine. mine only had one problem , if you went
in real deep water. it died. i took it apart and sealed everything. but it
still did it. my buddy had the same 4 wheeler and his never died in water.
i finally sold it and bought a Yamaha and never had anymore troubles.
i have owned many yamahas all the way back to my motoX days in the
70's. i still think a Yamaha is the most reliable built machine made. Marty
is right about durability. I am not a speed demon. so i dont care how fast it will
go. just watch utube vids. a Rhino will go where ever a teryx will go or a RZR.
but there is alot of holes i seen a Rhino go , that the others got stuck.
if your a woods rider , I still dont think you can beat it.. it will get you there
and bring you back. in good comfort. and to me that means alot.
the main reson i posted that vid. is because. i had that same thing happen to me.
when i drove the teryx at the dealer brand new. it was disappointing.
when i ask the sales guy what it was. he said thay all do it. and the belt has to be
adjusted often. So i figure if it does it brand new. whats it going to do. after
a few hundred miles in Kentucky...... cheers i drove it in summer time. after 30 min.
it was cooking my right leg. there is no way i could stay in that thing with shorts on .
as long as we rode in kentucky. you would haft to stop every ten min.

Chris.... allright

The Yamaha and Arctic Cat both have transmissions with internal clutches so that the belt always stays under tension. This is not as efficient but makes the belt last much longer. For durability internal clutch is the only way to go. With the internal clutch you can leave the rhino idling in drive and the belt will be fine.

The Teryx has the same dry belt engagement system as the Brute Force but uses a larger belt. The squeling is just the belt slipping and is normal for the system. It's more efficient for power delivery but uses belts. Ride it easy and they last but be abusive and it'll destroy belts often. Sitting in drive running the belt is just slipping -- not good. He needs to drive it!

If it's summer and I'm riding my Rhino I will be in shorts and sandals. That's the advantage of the Rhino. I could care less if I get wet or muddy -- the Rhino is about comfort.

Now if I'm riding my Can-am I'll be wearing waders or some kind of pants. Totally different ride or purpose. The Rhino is more comfortable while the Can-am is more about explorin' and looking for some danger. :pirat:
