Well the great thing about this country is that we have the right to choose whether we want one or not. I am a Union member, and I am a steward. I will be the first to admit that I am not happy with the union leadership in this country today, that is doing absolutely nothing for the members except shoveling money to Washington DC, in hopes that the Democrats will lead us to the promised land. It is throwing the money away on nothing but corruption. As far as labor is concerned, all that money would be better spent at the Local level where it's really needed. One thing that blows my mind, is that there is alot of animosity in this country towards unions, and at a time when unions have less influence in this country than at any time in the last 75 years. You hardly ever see a strike anymore.....anywhere. My guess is that aligning themselves with the Democratic Party has givin them a black eye. And rightfully so. I am a Republican, and that makes me not one of the favorite guys at the Union hall. I believe that if you want to live like a Republican, you need to be one and think like one. . That means running your Union like a business and not like a charity for the Democratic party. We can go on about this forever, but this is how i see it. All the way up till the early 70's, America had a very strong sense of community where we lived. Everyone looked out for everyone else. That held true for Union labor. When a Local company went on strike, the community supported that Union and would boycott the company until the dispute was resolved. People stuck together through good times and bad. the local small businesses understood what a strong labor market meant to them. The local shoe store understood that a strong labor market meant he sold more shoes. The local construction company understood that a strong labor market meant more garages being built and porches put on homes. All that has changed now. The local shoe store was put out of business by Payless. The local hardware store was run out by Lowes. The Local grocer was run out by Walmart. Local schools became consolidated. And on and on and on. With all that came the deterioration of the local community. Since, that "WE" society has turned into a "ME" society. The "I got mine" attitude prevails. The only sense of community we have anymore are the Churchs and the Union halls, and both of them are in decline. Along with that has come the decline of the middle class. Whats going to turn it around? Not Washington, DC, i can assure you that. One thing is for sure. If it does not get turned around we will continue to decline as a nation. So, the next time you think that the unions are leading to the demise of the country. Consider the possibility that they may actually be one of the means to save it.

We did not have your typical migrant workers. Hell, all the guys that have been working for us had been employed for nine years. They had health insurance, 401K and disability insurance. Moreover, someone was paying taxes.

| I have seen it go both ways. We are in many union plants. UAW workers here at a Delphi (GM) seem to be the most aaaaaaaa "unfairly treated". So we no longer have a Delphi plant here with 4000 workers making 50 to 100k a year. I can say that the union their ran Delphi out this plant. However many others have had positive impacts here in our area. Boeing, paper mills, some others, at least these in our area, seem to have their shit together. My mom was a long time "hard core" steward. But I still love her anyway. I am sure someone out there still loves you too Yank! | |
