Help Us Stop the Secretary that Would Steal Christmas!

Dear BRC Members and Supporters,

Just one day before Christmas Eve 2010, Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar announced that he had signed an Order that seeks to embed a Wilderness review in every component of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) planning, creating a unique status for Wilderness different from other multiple uses in BLM management.

The order appears to be one of the best Christmas gifts any Wilderness activist could hope for. The timing was no accident. Secretary Salazar's new order came just after the Lame Duck Congress adjourned, having failed to pass the massive Public Lands Omnibus Bill--a package that would have created millions of acres of new Wilderness, openly supported by the Secretary. It was no accident the Order was announced after legislators had gone home for the holiday. It was no accident that none but Wilderness insiders and their media outlets knew about it until the last minute. And, it was certainly no accident that at the ceremony, the Secretary was standing right next to peolple like Peter Metcalf, CEO of Black Diamond Equipment, and that the ceremony itself took place at the REI Building in Denver - a virtual altar scene for Wilderness worshippers.

You have every reason to fear under-handed tactics even more suspicious than those attempted by some of their lame duck legislative allies. Wilderness activists will likely try to use Secretary Salazar's Order to further paralyze meaningful BLM travel management and to create millions of acres of new Wilderness.

For decades, Wilderness activist groups have applied constrictor-like pressure on the BLM regarding Wilderness issues. Some of BRC Legal's finest moments have come in rejecting those efforts, most notably the dismissal of the infamous SUWA case in Utah District Court on BRC-USA All's motion, eventually upheld by a 9-0 thumping in the U.S. Supreme Court. Sadly, this looks like another inside job in the offing, through which anti-access interests seek to seize a window of political opportunity to again squeeze BLM into a never-ending, ongoing Wilderness inventory and management scheme.

The Order is as complex and convoluted as any validly promulgated law or regulation. Its meaning is not readily apparent and will likely be determined by the courts.

Unlike Pelosi, an elected Public Servant who we are stuck with even though she's been demoted, the Secretary of the Interior is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the President. So unless he screws up really bad and makes Obama look worse . . . we are stuck with him as long as we're stuck with Obama! There's a good chance of him blowing it though, for nearly 100 years people who have held his position have been caught up in scandals and corruption charges.

Click on "Ideas" and you are presented with every "Idea" the target a$$hat ever posted. From there it is a simple matter of "Demoting" every "Idea" presented by that person! Be careful though, I've created some disinformation posts that appear to be one thing but are actually another and so have others. I'm the guy currently playing whack-a-mole on Salazar.

Conversely, if you find an "Idea" presenter who is pro-access you can do the same thing only "Promote" their "Ideas". Quick, easy and ultimately satisfying!!!

Also, on the "main" page at the top there is an "Unvoted" selection that can be clicked on showing all those "Ideas" that have escaped the other means mentioned.

It's a great way to vent, have fun and make a difference . . . posting "Comments" is even more rewarding, you can use that feature as mentioned above (for viewing groups of "Ideas") to view existing crud and add your !!

Most people only see what the Congress and President do when it comes to National policy. They don't see what the appointed Officials like the Sect. of Interior or Head of the EPA do behind the scenes, because most Americans are not engaged in the issues. Obama's Environmental nut cases that he has appointed to these positions are doing great damage to the country. I see it first hand working in the Chemical manufacturing industry. They are also doing great damage to the energy industry also, as well as the recreation industry by the Land grabs that are restricting access to public lands. Since they lost the Congress, these folks are working overtime behind the scenes to try to promote their Environmental agenda without Congressional legislation.

We have got to get rid of the Obama administration in 2012, and get one in there that will reverse the damage that has been done. 4 more years of it will be devastating.

Since California hatched Pelosi we are at fault for the monster but unfortunatly I'm afraid she'll get re-elected like Boxer just did and I'm sure these idiots will give Feinstein another ride too!!

I agree that the current "Administration" has to go in 2012 but the political system has been so corrupt and screwed up for so long that I doubt an honest crew of Public Servants (if one could be cobbled together) would be able to fix the mess that has been created over the last century let alone the last two years even if given the remainder of this entire century to do it. It's that screwed up IMHO!

We'll see what happens obviously but I believe with Obama apparently set on adopting something akin to the Cloward-Piven strategy as his official policy (my tongue firmly in cheek) he'll take us much further down, even if he's only a one term wiener.
