My 2009 RZR LE Rip !!!

Hey folks ! Hope all are well an Happy Holidays ! I havent been on this site in awhile but i had a very strange thing happened to my rzr last sunday.We were riding at Wooleys offroad in cornersville,tn an had been riding for a couple of hours when we came to the end of one trail an when i stopped i smelled something burning so my girlfriend gets out an says its on fire !! I bale out of course an right over the top of the motor was a ball of fire about the size of a tennis ball that had the plastic above already burning, We two half full bottles of water an threw them on there an didn't even faze the flame.Of course i didn't have a fire extinguisher an we took a rag tried to put it out and it kept going by this time the flames were up above the seats and we became feared for our safety so we got back out of the way and needless to say it burned to the ground in its tracks !!!
Yes i have insurance but my question to you'll is have you ever seen this before and what might have caused this ?? I have have been told by a couple of polaris dealers to contact polaris and i have to investigate to see what might have happend an if they(MFG) will do anything about it !

Some of the regular 08 models would get leaves and trash thrown up by the wheels on the exhaust and cause fires but different heat shields were added in 09, could be yours had the old style. Guys this type thing is why i always carry a fire extinguisher and urge everyone too, you can get them on ebay with mount for 20 bucks.

Good point gunny i always carried 2 on my Dune Buggy will be getting 1 4 the RZR as well

I was at Ultimate Toyz in Knoxville a couple of weeks ago and they were going over a RZR that caught on fire just setting out in the side shed. It hadn't been started in over 24 hours and it went to blaze.

I snuck out today for a little ride this afternoon. On the way back in tonight sniper started flashing his lights at me. Turned out I had burning leaves under the bed dropping down on the trail. Luckily nothing got bad and it was just a little smoke by the time I stopped and checked it out. I WILL be getting a fire extinguisher now.

My regular sized RZR did that twice last winter... it hasn't happened since I upgraded to the LT suspension. The wider track width apparently doesn't throw the leaves directly onto the headers...

I saw one burning at the Tony's Toys trailer at the Fall Jam at Windrock this year(Don't know what started it) and we were sitting at the top of T-22 at Windrock one morning and a guy pulled in and his bed was burning.Looked like he had just put an aftermarket exhaust system on it and it was too close to the bottom of the bed.

Gunny is probably right. They have problems with leaves catching fire.

They were priming the nitros and a spark set it off.

That sucks!! As far as extinguishers go, I've had one mounted to my roll cage for a couple years now. I paid about 50 bucks for the mount and another 10 for the extinguisher.. I've been asked several times out on the trail by people looking over my RZR if my state requires me to have one.. I'm quick to tell them no, I just know how quick fires can start and how hard even a small one can be to put out..
The way mine is mounted Its very easy for anyone to see and very easy to access.. Pull one pin and its free.

Is that a aluminum hinge mount?

Man that sucks............
