Subject: popping up front Fri Dec 27, 2013 8:14 pm
got a popping sound coming from up front when in 4wd, don't hear nothing in 2wd, only hear it when I get on it, its a 12 800s, 28 tires, rhino axles, thanks for any advise

Check driveshaft where it connects into front diff, that joint gets sloppy

Could be the U joints like he said but if not Im going to bet something is broke in your front diff and is about to let go.

This would be my guess if it is making a popping noise. U-joints make a rattling noise.

I'd say front diff. Maybe sprague or tooth off ring gear.

i had heard that the cage/sprague in the front diff was changed to aluminum in mid 2010. but that sounds like what could be wrong here. its a easy change if it is. i dont think it would be a ring gear if it only does it in 4x4.

The hillard diff pops when under load or when there is a lot of stress put on them. Both the 800 and 900 does it. The 800 pops at less stress than the 900but I havnt seen it or heard of it out of the 1000 yet but I bet it will too once people start going up on wheel size and pushing it to its limit.

Mine pops too, sounds like front axle breaking. Just haven't took it apart yet.

rode it sat, noticed sometimes the front end wasn't pulling, sometimes it would, still popping, gonna tear into today, thanks for the suggestions

Me too. Seen it a lot when you have the front tires spinning off the ground, like jumping, then they hit the ground. That instant stop is what breaks the plastic. It is a safety. If you replace it with aluminum it will trash the whole diff if you do it again.

we took the front axles out, everything looks good, the front u joint looks good, so I guess its in the front diff, gonna take it to the dealer for repair, he was glad to hear from me, said it had been a couple months since I had been there, said bring it on in they would fix me up, still spending in 2013, go Polaris!! thanks for the input

The plastic sprague was the most stupid thing polaris did with the front diff. The next stupid thing is that even the 1k still uses crappy bearings on the pinion instead of tapered rollers. They will get it right one day or some other aftermarket co will.

its an easy fix to do yourself. i think i could do it without taking the diff out. i have removed the sprague with the diff still in the rzr. but if you have warranty let them fix it.

Several 900 guys are doing a 1000 front diff swap.. Gilbert Designs makes a swap kit for that. Also, they are working on a swap kit to put the 1000 diff in the 800--They said that was a couple of weeks out and would be available soon...
Just something to consider when having to spend money anyway on broken diffs... I bet the 1000 front diff in the 800 would never give you any trouble.
