One of our Knights of Columbus members, who also was a Louisville Metro Police Detective was killed at a FOP convention in Lexington KY Saturday. He was a 3rd Degree K of C Knight with us. Me and Pam are real close to his mom and dad. His dad is retired from Metro Police.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDRB) -- Lexington Police say a Louisville Metro Police officer and a second person have died after being hit by a vehicle early Saturday morning.
The officer killed has been identified as LMPD Detective Jason Schweitzer, according to a post made Saturday morning on the Louisville Metro Police Facebook page.
The second pedestrian killed has been identified as Timothy Moore, 56, of Lexington, according to the Fayette County deputy coroner.
The incident happened around 2:30 a.m., according to Lexington Police spokesperson Brenna Angel. That's when officers were called to South Upper Street near Bolivar Street on a report of an injury collision.
Police say Suzanne Whitlow, 26, of Lexington has been charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter and one count of DUI.
Investigators say Whitlow was driving on Upper Street when she lost control of the vehicle and hit Detective Schweitzer and another pedestrian. It's unclear what caused Whitlow to lose control of the vehicle, but that remains under investigation by Lexington Police.
Both victims were taken to a hospital, where they later died.
Detective Schweitzer began working for the Jefferson County Police Department in November of 2001. He was a detective in LMPD's 6th Division. Schweitzer was also the vice president of the River City FOP Lodge 614. He began serving in that role in 2010.
Friends say Schweitzer's wife is pregnant with the couple's second child.
Funeral arrangements were released Sunday.
Schweitzer's visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 1 - 8 p.m. with an FOP service at 7 p.m. at the Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home in East Louisville on Shelbyville Road.
Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Kentucky officials from Louisville and Lexington released statements sharing their condolences to Schweitzer's family and LMPD.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer released a statement Saturday via Twitter:
"Our community mourns the death of Det. Jason Schweitzer, who served, protected our city and its citizens as an officer in the 6th division. We send our deep condolences to his family and his fellow officers of LMPD."
Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin posted Saturday to his Facebook page:
“It is with great sadness that we learned of the tragic death of LMPD officer, Jason Schweitzer. I had an opportunity to meet with Jason a few months ago. He was part of multi-generational family of law enforcement officers and his presence on the force and in his community will be greatly missed. We are heartbroken for his wife and children, both born and unborn, at the news of this devastating loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family both now and in the months and years ahead.”
LMPD Chief Steve Conrad released a statement Saturday afternoon on the department's Facebook page:
"This is a sad day for LMPD. Early this morning, we were astonished to learn of the tragic death of Detective Jason Schweitzer of our 6th Division. Jason was the FOP Vice-President and was in Lexington this weekend attending a FOP conference. Around 2:30am, he and another pedestrian were struck and killed by a vehicle which had left the roadway.
We offer our sincerest condolences to Jason's family and friends for when one of us hurts, we all hurt. Please keep Jason's family, friends and co-workers in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

He was very passionate about representing members as an executive board member of the FOP, but nothing was more important to Jason than his family. He leaves behind a wife, who is expecting their second child, a young daughter, and many other family members.
