| This is one of the most one sided stories I ever read but it is the only story most people will read. I've been riding there for ten years and the only MAJOR damage to the place has been caused by the Forestry Service trying to close trails and grading roads that caused more erosion that the ATVs ever would. Please read........... http://www.kentucky.com/785/story/496880.html | |

| I love it... "They dug a series of deep trenches..." Yeah, that won't leave a mark. |

| This is a copy of an e-mail sent to Tom Eblen at teblen@herald-leader.com Your story about the Slade area was very informative but unfortunatly I feel it is completely one sided aganst off-roaders. I and my family and friends often ride ATV's and UTV's in this area and consider ourselves to be quite responsible off-road enthusiest. We often pick up trash left by others and do general trail maintenence to improve the riding experience for everyone. I agree that many improvements can be made to this area but getting rid of the all terrain vehicles is not the only answer. I would rather see a responsible organization oversee these lands to protect and preserve nature in a way that can be enjoyed by all. I am a taxpayer too and do not feel it is fair to lock these lands away from me and my family just because a few have mis-treated it. Lets all get together and promote responsibility in preservation. I would like to personaly invite you to take a day with me and my family to enjoy a day on the trails with us so you could see for yourself that not all off-roaders fit the dark image you have painted. Thank you for your time and give me a call if you want to take me up on my offer. Clay Reed (859)771-3141 | |

| A perfect example of the one sided CRAP that the Lexington Herald puts out on a daily basis...If they couldnt bash east KY they wouldnt have anything to write about...
They sure love our coal severance $$$ that they do NOTHING to earn....but love to point out all and ONLY the bad sides of coal mining, drugs in east KY, and now ATVs.
They are a JOKE. My response wasnt near as intellectual as Clays...wish it was in retrospect. Mine was taken off...I basically just told them...well literally told them....that they didnt know shit and to shut the hell up.

I feel the same way..... they obviously don't have a clue

if thay mess up our rides. we will haft to get rough...... they are the elitists of KY culture...they even went so far in this article to bash our Lt Gov....who is VERY pro-atv and who I have rode with several times...trust me, the opinions of these journalists means absolutely nothing...like i said...anything they can do to put a bad light on east ky they will do... and R...i can be very politically incorrect too...only correct when i have to be....if i feel being politically incorrect gets my point across better, then so be it brother

| To be honest, it is typical. Gun ownership draws the same heat from idiots who don't know any better. YES, erosion is caused by ATVs. BUT, erosion is also caused by many other things too. I am sure that there are plenty of timber companies that run skidders and all kinds of heavy equipment all around that causes erosion and runoff. I am sure they don't raise ten kinds of hell when the heavy equipment move all that dirt to open up new shopping malls or housing developments. I am in agreement that some ATV owners are irresponsible, trespass, litter, etc, but that is a small number in comparison to the thousands that ride but also bring out their trash. Erosion is going to be a problem as long as there are ATVs and off-road vehicles in places that don't put forth any effort to maintain the trails. How about this idea.........open up more lands and with our taxpayer dollars hire some equipment to maintain them. I am sure there are many who would volunteer some time to help keep these places operational and open for recreational use. And BTW Lexington Herald....... :foff: | |

| Sounds like west KY looks down on folks in east KY, the same way us in western VA are looked down on by east VA!
Some wealthy folk here in southwest VA once were gonna buy a billboard in Roanoke VA as you're traveling west which simply stated:
THE BUCK STOPS HERE!
Don't know if they ever did or not though?
