| Guys, I created and run a site for people who use and restore old Simplicity and Allis-Chalmers garden tractors. A lot of people get into that hobby simply because of $$. You can buy a used 1970's machine in good working condition for $500 that is ten times the machine that you'd buy at Home Depot or a dealer for $2000. So they fix them up and use them -- how many Ford 8N and 9N tractors are still in use, for example? Some people go nuts restoring them, sinking hundreds of hours and hundreds of dollars restoring them, and take them to antique tractor shows. But, this is a fraction of the cost of restoring a '57 Chevy or a full-size tractor, and can be just as much fun... Some do the same thing with turning garden tractors into pullers... Similarly, guys are taking the cheaper Murrays, MTDs and Crapsman machines and either building lawn-mower racers or what they call mud-boggers out of them. For less than $1000 -- sometimes $250 to $500, they can go have fun. But, then the competition raises the bar in any of these endeavors, and you can sink a small fortune in them if you're not careful.... It's all done for fun, and many of them do it with/for their kids. | |

If it's an old rear-engine Gravely, please don't... those old tanks are too good of a machine to abuse... If it's one of the new MTDs with a Gravely label on, have at it... | |
