"Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced plans today for launching an effort this year to convince Americans of the need to preserve open spaces and to expand land conservation to a grander scale.
"We hope to launch what will be the creation of a 21st [century] conservation dialogue," Salazar told Interior employees at a town-hall meeting.
Noting that Americans lose 3 million acres of land to development every year, Salazar said people have begun to lose their connection to the land. He said the department must "tie the American landscape back together" and can no longer imagine a national park as insulated or isolated from the lands around."
