| I just ordered one of these... should help find the trailheads, then map the trails to repeat the ride or find my way back out. Garmin Nuvi 500 "crossover" with US streets + topos of the entire US, waterproof for 30 minutes submerged, operates to -4 degrees... for $140 with a 1 year warranty. Note that it gives voice directions for street navigation with the latest firmware upgrades. Must be the Scots part of my Scots-Irish heritage, but I thought it too good of a deal to pass up. http://www.tigergps.com/refurbnuvi500.htmlHere's a good review of the GPS (though it talks about street navigation almost exclusively): http://www.gpsmagazine.com/2008/07/garmin_nuvi_500_review.phpBTW, retail is $250 -300, and the original MSRP was close to $500... Dang, I'm spending all my "toy money" as it accumulates -- at this rate, I'll never save up enough for a good set of shocks... | |

| I wanted the crossover. However, I did not want to spend the money at that time. Now $140 might fit in the budget. The is a smoking deal with the warranty. | |

That's what I thought -- since Garmin's 100K:1 topos are almost $100, depending on where you buy them. Thought, if nothing else, it could be a decent "first GPS" since I've never owned one. A relatively inexpensive experiment, if you know what I mean... | |

| Just got it tonight... looks absolutely new -- I couldn't find a scratch on it. All the accessories definitely had never been opened. My guess is someone had problems updating it or something, and just took it back saying it didn't work. I've spent the last 3 hours updating the firmware, and installing the 2010 base maps (2010 city, 2008 topo), plus MapSource, and a few custom icons. It's an impressive little gadget. I'll pick up an 8GB microSD tomorrow and load some of the free 24K maps on that -- too cheap to pay $77 (eBay) to $100 (stores) just to add 24K maps of New England. I'm going to play with it going to and from work, just to get used to it. Then, I should get an opportunity to use it in the woods NEXT weekend (not this Easter weekend) and I'll let you know what I think. That'll give me time to get it mounted in the Rhino... BTW, folks, there's a free GPS map of the Windrock trails at GPS File Depot, if you haven't found it already. I discovered it using Google looking for free GPS maps: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/tn | |
