They will be unrestricted trails. Not Hatfield/McCoy. They will be within 15 miles of Charleston, WV.

PostSubject: Re: WV Ride June 6-13   WV Ride June 6-13 EmptyThu May 01, 2008 10:05 am

Hey WVYank.....I am new here. My handle is Airborne LT. I am from Barboursville, but I have been in the Army for four and a half years now. I am stationed at FT Campbell KY, but currently serving a 15 month tour in Afghanistan. I am coming home on R&R leave around the 3rd of June. I am buying a new Rhino at Riverfront in Gallopolis the day after I get home. I have been working on gettting a ride together that weekend. I have a buddy in PT Pleasant, one in Charleston, one is driving in from Lexington, KY. What are the details of your plan? I can' stay gone for an extended period cause I do need to spend some time with the family of course, but I would like to maybe get in on some of this. I have ridden at Ivy off Corridor G. I usually ride in Mason County or Lincoln County. Where are you headed, and can me and my wife (at a minimum) tag along for a day or maybe two? I know we may not be able to get together on the first weekend, depending on how far from Charleston you are going to stray, but sometime early the week after, maybe on the 9th or 10th. I am a planner by nature.....so I would like to at least put this in the think-tank for possible days of play for me and the wife. I only have 18 days totat, so I do need to maximize time with the kid and the rest of my family, but we are up for some riding, especially with the new Rhino. I also own a 2007 700 King Quad. The Rhino is the "wife's" toy if you know what I mean. I am looking forward to some time off, and more looking forward to some time in the seat. I am going stir crazy over here. Eat

Would be more than happy to have ya. Looking at a 2 day thing. I will keep this thread updated on the details. Myself and a couple friends are still deciding what direction we want to go. It will be around the Charleston area. I'll be glad to see your Boots back on the ground in WV cheers BTW. Myself and 2 of my buddys are KingQuad 700 owners, but I sold mine when I got the Rhino. Here is a pic at Moab, UT. last year....3 Kings

PostSubject: Re: WV Ride June 6-13   WV Ride June 6-13 EmptyThu May 01, 2008 10:06 pm

Well for now I plan on keeping the King. I am on my second King, the first was an unfortunate loss. I had a green one, but now have a camo one. The Rhino was something that caught my interest last fall when I was in Mason County on leave for deer season. One guy at camp has one, and he and his son were cruising around with a soft shell enclosure. I was impressed about how functional it was. I had recently sold the wife's Formeman, and I was going to buy her a new quad when I got back from Afghanistan. I brought up the Rhino, took her to the dealer, and convinced her that it would be a fun toy. We have a little one, and I am sick of leaving her at home every time we want to go ride, so that was the selling point. I told her I would make it as safe as possible with doors, safety harnesses, etc. She fought me at first, but when I showed her pics online of other people with kids in theirs, she got on board with the idea. I have called all the dealers around Charleston, Huntington, Ashland, etc. Riverfront Honda offered me the best deal. I have already bought a set of 26-9-12 and 26-12-12 Mud Wolf tires off ebay to have mounted on the Rhino. I also bought a front bumper, a bikini top with roll-up back window, and I am waiting for my dealer to hit me back about J-Strong doors and windshield. I also purchased a performance clutch kit from Fix Powersports, including the primary sheave, shims and roller weights. I have not decided if I am going to try and tackle the clutch kit before the maiden voyage, or wait till after deployment. I like to tinker with the toys, but I hate to waste a day putting in the clutch kit when I could be riding or spending time with the family. We will see once I get home.

Where did you go to high school? I went to Huntington East when it was still open. My Dad and uncle both coached basketball there at East. My uncle still coaches the Huntington High girls team which is a state championship contender every year.

Well folks we are definately riding the 7th thru the 10th. Still trying to make our minds up about whether we are going to do a camp out on Sat. night (the8th) or just have day rides close to Charleston those 4 days. Probably looking at logging 250 miles those 4 days. Got several people interested in riding those days, so if your thinking about coming up, tell me what days you'll be riding. ex..sat, sun.....mon, tues etc...and let me know your lodging plans so I can tell ya where is best to stay. The reason we are still undecided on the camp over is the place we are thinking of going is about 70 miles and 1 1/2 hours east of Charleston. Going up there for Sat. and Sun. and coming back and regrouping for the monday and tuesday rides will add a little stress and take away from the Saturday and Sunday ride time. Were thinking it may be better to stick close to Charleston where we can get 4 full days of good riding in. Let me know if your planning on coming and for what days.

Ok guys. The deal is were going to delete the overnighter on the trail. The one area we were thinking of going was too much of a haul, and the other place was close, but just didn't feel comfortable leaving peoples vehicles where we have to park them overnight. So, we are going to be doing 4 days of local rides, probably about 60 miles on the trail each day. We will be riding in one area that is about 5 miles east of Charleston for 2 days and one area that is 10 miles south of Charleston for 2 days. This will be on the 4 days of June 7-10, Saturday thru Tuesday. Anyone is welcome to come for 1 day or all 4 if you like. Just let me know your intentions so I can be on the lookout for ya. The logistics are as follows: I will have about a 35 mile drive from my house each day to these trailheads. People coming in from out of state and are planning to stay overnight have these options. You can stay in a Hotel which there are plenty of them, and reservations will not be a problem, anywhere from within 1 mile of my house all the way to within 5 miles of the trailheads. If you want to camp, here is the link for the closest campground http://www.kanawhastateforest.com/camping.html

This campground is between my house and the trailheads. It is about 25 miles from my house, and 10 miles from the trailheads. I will be planning to have a Burger and Beer thing at my house for those that want to come, so whether you want to be closer to my house or closer to the trailheads will be your decision. Here are the Hotels closest to me:
Holiday Inn Express
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/wnfwv?rpb=rate&crUrl=/h/d/hi/1/en/rates/wnfwv%3Fias%3Dy&ias=y

Choice Hotels(Sleep,Comfort,Etc..) About 10 miles from me, and 25 miles from trailheads.A Sleep Inn is right next to this Comfort

Plenty of Restaurants around, no matter where you stay. If you want closer to the trailheads, do a Hotel search for Charleston, WV.

Here is a Map showing the trailhead locations, the campground locations, and my house location:

For whoever wants to Mapquest to my house, the address is 104 Laurel Ridge, Scott Depot, WV. 25560

Hope to see you there cheers

Let me know what your thinking Big-R when you get plans made. It's going to be some awesome riding cheers

We are riding the southernmost trailhead on the map above Saturday. I'm planning on leaving my house at 9:00-9:30. I can meet you off I-64. Sunday, we may do the Northern trailhead, or ride the same place. It's flexable and enough riding at each trailhead for weeks and not run the same trails.

The Southern trailhead is alot of Ridgetop riding, and the Northern trailhead is alot of Hollows and creek crossings. The terrain is a little different at both locations. It's nice to mix it up a bit woo hoo

I like the grill and beer idea; however, I don't like the 35 miles back to your house Laughing The wife would like to stay close to the trail heads at a hotel. Witch hotels are close to the trails?

Just do a search on any of the Hotel chains for Charleston,WV., and in the search put in for a 25 mile radius. They all will show the hotels they have on a map, and compare the locations to the map I have posted in the post above. That way you can pick what hotel and price range you want to stay at. Are you planning to drive up Sat. Morning?
