| I usually dont get into politics too much but this one upset me........
Subj: John McCain's remarks about the Pledge of Allegiance
John McCain's remarks about the Pledge of Allegiance
In light of the recent appeals court ruling in California , with respect to the Pledge of Allegiance, the following recollection from Senator John McCain is very appropriate:
'The Pledge of Allegiance' - by Senator John McCain 'As you may know, I spent five and one half years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. In the early years of our imprisonment, the NVA kept us in solitary confinement or two or three to a cell. In 1971 the NVA moved us from these conditions of isolation into large rooms with as many as 30 to 40 men to a room.
< /SPAN> This was, as you can imagine, a wonderful change and was a direct result of the efforts of millions of Americans on behalf of a few hundred POWs 10,000 miles from home.
One of the men who moved into my room was a young man named Mike Christian. Mike came from a small town near Selma , Alabama . He didn't wear a pair of shoes until he was 13 years old. At 17, he enlisted in the US Navy. He later earned a commission by going to Officer Training School Then he became a Naval Flight Officer and was shot down and captured in 1967. Mike had a keen and deep appreciation of the opportunities this country and our military provide for people who want to work and want to succeed.
As part of the change in treatment, the Vietnamese allowed some prisoners to receive packages from home. In some of these packages were handkerchiefs, scarves and other items of clothing.
Mike got himself a bamboo needle. Over a period of a couple of months, he created an American flag and sewed on the inside of his shirt.
Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang Mike's shirt on the wall of the cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance.
I know the Pledge of Allegiance may not seem the most important part of our day now, but I can assure you that in that stark cell it was indeed the most important and meaningful event.
One day the Vietnamese searched our cell, as they did periodically, and discovered Mi ke's shirt with the flag sewn inside, and removed it.
That evening they returned, opened the door of the cell, and for the benefit of all of us, beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours. Then, they opened the door of the cell and threw him in. We cleaned him up as well as we could.
The cell in which we lived had a concrete slab in the middle on which we slept Four naked light bulbs hung in each corner of the room.
As I said, we tried to clean up Mike as well as we could. After the excitement died down, I looked in the corner of the room, and sitting there beneath that dim light bulb with a piece of red cloth, another shirt and his bamboo needle, was my friend, Mike Christian. He was sitting there with his eyes almost shut from the beating he had received, making another American flag. He was not making the flag because it made Mike Christian feel better. He was making that flag because he knew how important it was to us to be able to Pledge our allegiance to our flag and country.
So the next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance, y ou must never forget the sacrifice and courage that thousands of Americans have made to build our nation and promote freedom around the world. You must remember our duty, our honor, and our country.'
'I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisable, with liberty and justice for all.'
PASS THIS ON... And on... And on! You can even send it back to me, I don't mind, because its worth reading again.
oh......and then you have this clown, who refuses to place his hand on his heart and say the pledge......
Subject: Remember this picture on el ection day! Let's all remember this on election day...if you have family serving in the military, make sure you send it along. I don't care for Hillary, but at least she shows respect for the country she lives in! I had heard about this but a picture is definitely worth 1000 words! God save us!!!
Senator Barack Obama, Governor Bill Richardson, Senator Hillary Clinton and Ruth Harkin stand during the national anthem. Barack Hussein Obama's photo (that's his real name).....the article said he REFUSED TO NOT ONLY PUT HIS HAND ON HIS HEART DURING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, BUT REFUSED TO SAY THE PLEDGE.....how in the hell can a man like this expect to be our next Commander-in-Chief

politics are a touchy subject anywhere... the story about McCain - touching - true American pride, and I certainyl hope he is our next president (my opinion) but - thsi Obama / Clinton race is mind blowing... as much as I am not for either candidate... how can the Obama have such a lead in the elections by the people - yet still be 2 super delegate votes shy of Clinton... the super delegates really are representing their constituents well huh? And, as much as I hate to say this - I think Obama would be the lesser of two evils compared to Clinton.

| People need to take a hard look at this Obama dude, and they are not doing it. This guy will be the closest thing to Fidel Castro that ever ran for the Oval office, and the Democrats are getting ready to put him in there. Unbelieveable where this country is going | |

| If this piss's anybody off well. but obama is scary as to his heritage, musslum with a athesit for a mother, clinton is scary cause of how many secrets she hides, missing files and a murdered vince foster, mccain scare me cause he wants to escalate this freekin mistake of a war, enough of our men and women have died. IMO, we loose who ever of these 3 win. | |

| I agree with your sentiments about Clinton and Obama - but I respectfully disagree about McCain...and we truly dont have another choice gunny...
I dont think McCain wants to escalate an already drawn out / under-funded war effort - BUT - anyone can stand up there and PULL us out immediately - the real problem is we have to do it diplomatically and retain foreign relations purely based on our supply and demand for oil...
we also have to stengthen our realtions with Russia - as they wil be the next world supplier of oil in the coming years when they finish their ENORMOUS refinery island. SAKHALIN
we also have to strengthen our relations with China - as they will control the entire world's supply of any goods due to their size....
with all that being said - it is obviously a global economy - and our economy is what makes us tick - and McCain is about the only politicianwith enough experience (war, recession, boom markets. etc) to manage this nation....
just IMO. | |

just IMO. have you not listened to mcCain? He is all for the escalation to victory and in his own words"if it takes 99 years" There will never be victory over there, we can stay 1 year or 99 years, the only difference will be the number of our great young men killed and wounded fighting. Whenever we pull out, the stronger sect will kill whoever we set up running the country and they will take over and run it like they want to. It will happen this way, watch and see. You have your opinion and I have mine. As for oil, if our goverment would grow some balls and push the tree huggers aside we have plenty of our own oil we could harvest and stop depending on these other countries. Rant over Im done

If we don't get a viable democracy functioning in Afghanistan and Iraq before we leave, we will eventually have to go back at a much higher cost than if we just stay and finish the job. If we cant get Iran to back off the Nukes, we will be fighting over there next, because if we dont, Isreal will and then there will be a very large pile of This whole situation is not very good, but then again no war is. I truly believe it is unfortunately necessary to avoid a much more costly scenerio down the road in lives and money. That's my opinion, and the radical muslims have formed my opinion since the Olympics in the 70's, Beirut in the 80's, and the Trade Center, USS Cole, and Somalia in the 90's. And finally the elimination of the Trade Centers in 2001. Without complete removal of this threat, the eventual very large scale attack with WMD's would have been just a matter of time. Whether we want to be at war we these folks or not is beside the point. They want to be at war with us. We have no choice than to honor their wishes.

This subject has no good end, Too much religion mixed with politics, I just wish there was somebody better suited to be president than what we have. I thought huckaby would have been a better choice, but thats politics, seldom does the best person for the job win.

| I am nowhere close to a Military strategist, but I have often wondered why we don't pull our troops (all 160,000 of them ) back from the center, and seal the borders with Iran and Syria and let the Iraq Military take care of weeding them out on the interior with our air support? After their supply's dry up their done.
I do agree with you Gunny on a Democracy's chances in Afghanistan. Those people are light years away from being able to govern themselves, but I disagree with you on Iraq. They are very westernized and very capable of running a successful democracy. I think the insurgents know this too. that is why they are fighting so hard there and not in Afghanistan. Along with Irans help, because a democracy in Iraq will eventually lead to Iran falling without a shot fired. The young people in Iran are already hungry for it. All they need to hear is how great life is in the new Iraq, and it's on. Cival War. I myself would like to see our troops come home also. I just think that their has been too much sacrifice to just leave now. The war is already won. We are just cleaning up the mess from the aftermath of it. People don't remember the tremendous cost and lives lost after WWII, during the execution of the Marshall plan in rebuilding and yes, resecuring Europe. There were lots of lives lost by us in straightening out that mess, as well as financial cost. What if we just walked away and left them to fend for themselves. we wouldn't have been looking at the same Europe today. The Soviet Union would have seen to that.
