| I thought yesterday that I havent serviced or even inspected my clutch in about 500 miles. I put the H/W sheave at about 300 miles, now I'm at 8. I installed it per Todds video, and most of the time I agree with Todd, but "just use any old grease" on the sheave............wrong!!! I used hi-temp wheel-bearing grease upon install. Today when I tore her down, no grease, not even remenants of grease, just dust!!!! So I cleaned everything up and used some Sta-Lube, high-pressure cv grease this time. I'm glad I caught it when I did, an explosion was comming soon. If you've never checked it, I recommend it, even if it's stock. It takes me about 45 mins to tear-down,clean-up and re-install. Before and after-sorry the pics suck!! Jimbo |

| Good to know Pate...... Do you run a CVT filter. i heard it was a very bad thing to do. and not to do it. as it dont let enough air in and cooks the sheave dry... | |

| Damn Jimbo Is that normal? What do you think the problem was? Do you have a CVT intake filter? I remember people writing on RF.net about that happening with the filter on from blocking air flow and overheating it. The owners manual says nothing about ever having to regrease the sheave. You would think after making these things for 4 years if it was a problem they would have addressed it. | |

| No, no filter. I did the reasearch on that. The stock sheave is packed,I mean PACKED with grease. Most thoughts is they over-packed it to reduce noise. When I took the stocker off I was amazed, talk about a dust trap. I probably was a little too conservative with grease the first time, per Todds video, lesson learned.
I don't think Yamaha mentions it in the owners manual because it was ment to be a utility-vehicle, maybe?? Or just another plot for the dealer to make some bucks. I do guarentee this, if you've got over 500 miles, you will be appalled on what you see inside. |

More than likely Pep-Boys or Advanced, that's the only two places I frequent. I'm by no means saying this is "the greatest stuff since sliced-bread" but Weller-Racing uses it. Nuff said. |

| there was several people over at RF.net. said thay have 1500 to 2000 miles on the rhino with stock sheave and belt on. thats why i dont like fooling with crap like that if there is no need. Yamaha knew what thay were doing. i realize in pates case he wanted to race and needed the sheave. but for me i like leaveing all that grease in there. I knew when i saw todds vid. i just did not think that dab of grease was enough. its just my view.... Oh , the tech at my dealer said he has worked there 10 years , and has never had to put a belt on a rhino or a grizzly. he swares by yamaha's CVT system. he said polaries, CVT. was ok. but not great and he said the kawi CVT was garbage, and already had to fix a bunch of 08's passing on info learned.... | |

Chris your right it was not enough, I agree. Buuuutttt if you have seen the stock Yammie grease, like I have at only 300 miles, it was plain scary. It was grease mixed with dust and dirt because of the extreme amount of un-needed grease Yamaha put in there. If your comfortable with it, fine, leave it alone. Like they say" If it ain't broke, don't fix it". |

i only see the miles. what button to push. left side bottom? Left side top. It will give you bat-volts, time and hours. You need the first change at twenty hours.

| sheave service is crucial - especially if you have a modded sheave, belt or clutch weights, etc...
pate - glad you caught that now.

| Believe it or not, your machine does not need many miles for the sheave to look bad. I took the King's off at 200 miles to put in roller weights and it was BLACK. I think from the new belt wearing in. It had never been muddy or anything, just black and lots of dust. | |

| Yep, and it is not a problem. Machines go 6-8K miles with no filter on the CVT and no problems whatsoever except belt changes. I know some folks actually fluch there CVT out with water on occasion although I dont think it is necessary. | |

| My fellow King owner Clay from GA uses Westleys Bleach White and a water hose. He says it comes out looking like new money. I just used Simple Green on the sheave and rollers and sprayed it off. Did just fine and no belt slippage. I don't know what the "recommended" belt life is, but I know one guy on Nyroc got over 4k on his factory belt. That is nuts to me. I guess they are really tough.
BTW, do you guys carry spare belts on the trail? I am just curious. I never have, but it has crossed my mind. It sure would suck to get way out in the woods and burn one and be stuck.
