| Went to the dealer to buy YamaLube and filter for first oil change. Guy gives me 3 qts of oil and a filter in a Kawasaki box! I said you gave me a Kawa filter by mistake and the guy says neither company makes their own filters. They contract them out to this big filter company. The same company makes them for both and each manufacturer shares a common filter. He said the only difference is the writing on the filter and the price. Yamaha filter was about $18 and the Kawa was about $11. So I had the service dept make a note on the work order about it and had them do the first oil change while I watched. I'm glad I did it this way as I learned a couple things that I hadn't known. There is a dang spring and mesh filter above the drain plug that I hadn't been aware of. And the service tech showed me a couple little tricks on how to's. All and all it was well worth the $21 they charged me. I wasn't thinking at the time but should have asked which Kawasaki that filter fitted but I didn't. I can find out easy enough if anyone would like to know. | |

| If you do some digging you can find the cross reference number and buy them off the shelf at the local auto parts store for $4-5 per filter, at least you can for the 660. | |

| I thought I looked at Auto Zone once and didn't find anything. Didn't someone tell me that the 660 and the 450 used the same filter? That would indeed help some. Thanks Neuromax. | |

| If it uses the same filter as the 660 there are plenty of aftermarket choices. I know Napa, Wix, Fram, K&N all make one to fit the 660 I just don't have the part numbers. | |

| That same filter also fits the 350 Yamaha motor. I had bought 5 for my Wolverine I had and used the last 2 I had on my Rhino. Paid $20 shipped for 5 off Ebay. They were Emco filters. I just put a K&N Gold on this last oil change. A little pricey at $12, but like the nut on the end for your ratchet to fit on. | |

| There has been lots of discussion on oil and oil filters here and other sites. I too use aftermarket filters, with a semi-synthetic 4 cycle motorcycle oil. I dont know jack about oil filters but it makes sense that some would be better than others. So I would pick carefully if using the after market filters. One other thing I have learned is you can cross the filter with an aftermarket and still not have the right filter. I had this happen. The part of the filter that seats with the block has to be Identical with the stocker. What happened to me was once I installed the filter and fired up the motor oil gushed from around the filter. So before you put your covers and seat back in make sure you dont have this isse, motor go bang! Take the stocker with you just to make sure the filters mating surface is the same. | |

| For the 660 I remember on RF reading that the Walmart Supertech ST7317 is made by Champion -- the same company that makes the K&N filter. The supertech is rated highly along with the Purolator equivalent. Same filter as used on early model Miata's.
Generally avoid Fram. They went cheap in the 90's and have huge amounts of bad press and do bad in filter comparisons.
It's my understanding that the 450, 660, and 700 will take the same filter.

| Bush, do you run that heavy oil in cold weather also? Or is that just warmer weather that you use it? | |

| As Nocerisdave said, you need to be careful and make sure the face of the filter is dished out the same as the factory one. There is a large gland nut that it must fit over or it will blow out oil. In '01 I bought a Raptor (and still have it) and started looking for an after market filter. Did a lot of cross referencing on thread size and pitch. I found that the late model Mazda minivan with the V6 was almost the same. The only difference was that the filter was about an inch or so longer which I thought would be even better. The first filter I found to fit that I liked was an AC Delco but they became hard to find in my area so I changed. I also liked it because it was the same color blue as the bike. I now use the Bosch 3323 and have for several years. I have run it on my Rhino since it was new in '07. I have used others but have found the Bosch to be easy to find. I think my Raptor is a good testimony because it has been rode hard and put away wet for many years. And my two sons have no mercy on it either. I do try to change the oil every 10-15 hours. I think frequent oil changes are cheap insurance. | |
