| Gotta give credit to my Dad. He is the ultimate cat-fisherman. Cut bait is the key. Them cats love shad and skip jack guts. | |

| Dave, please share with me your secret for catching skipjacks for bait. I've tried the small white jigs around lock walls and bridge supports and stuff and I can't catch them to save meself. How do you do it? | |

Tick, we catch the skip jack by boat around 200 to 300 yards below the dam, between the turbins and open gates. It aint for the light hearted for sure. I would never recommend doing this unless you are with someone who has experience with it. You need to be very close to to white water, or the water being let through the gates. During this time of year they are in very swift water generated by the turbines and gates. Its usually better if there are 2 or more running. Its almost like catching instead of fishing. 3 treble hooks per pole (snaging skip jack is legal here)....and pull them in as soon as the hooks hit the water. Most of the time you can snag 50 to 75 in about 15 minutes. For the shad we use a wall dip net. takes about 5-10 minutes to catch 50-75. The Shad are my first choice....the cats seem to like them better....not to mention how dangerous it is in a boat at the turbines. Both are spawning right now and for some reason they both get in huge schools. Here is what it looks like below the turbines. Here are the gates. And you need to bewteen the two. | |

| Dave, I live on the Ohio River and we don't have anything like those turbins here yet. We are not permitted to get that close to the dams here. They are for locking through the big barges of coal etc. If you get above (upriver) of the bouys marking no man's land around home, the lock master or staff in the dam will take a picture of your hull number and mail you a fine in the mail. Thanks for the info. I'll figure out something when ever I get home. We're in Colo. with our youngest daughter ehlping out. She is in a high risk pregnancy and on total bedrest. | |
