Subject: Marine Speakers necessary? Wed Jan 19, 2011 11:33 pm
I'm in the process of building an overhead stereo system with 2 x 6.5 and 2 x 6x9 speakers. As long as the cones aren't paper, do they need to be marine?

It would be a plus. They will be exposed to the moisture.

well i am in the process of figuring out how to do my teryx but I can tell you I ran 4 walmart pioneer 6.5's for 4 years on my brute with being sunk in mud, creeks and riding in the rain and snow and being washed at the carwash or home by a pressure washer and it always sounded just as good. sooooooooooooooooo???????

They don't have to be marine speakers, per se. Check out Polk DB 651s, for example, for your 6.5". They're "marine rated" yet are great sounding speakers -- used by many people in their daily rides.
A lot of cheaper marine speakers sound "flat" because of the weatherproof materials used. These Polks do not.
Can't speak to the 6x9s, but I think there's similar Polks in that size.
Not sure of the size of your amp, but these will requires some power to sound good...

Yep, those 6.5" Polks will run $50-60 a pair if you shop around. The 651S (slimline) is a few $ cheaper. But, like most things, you generally get what you pay for... they're a serious, quality speaker that will last.

EDIT -- My "lessons learned" was on my truck, not my Rhino. Still running cheap speakers in the Rhino -- and still regret it. IMO, learning the hard way, the speakers are THE most important part of the system. Last time around, on the truck, I spent the $$ for Alpine speakers, then spent the remainder of my "budget" on the head-unit.

Check out Poly Planer.
I can tell you that there are only a few-yes just a few TRUE marine radio/cd player. Most are just painted white and called a marine unit. I had a setup from Bass Pro in my rhino, came with 2 6 inch speakers, CD player with I-Pod controlls, a splash gaurd, and some wiring. The CD player didnt last too long. The speakers sounded ok.

Yep. Poly Planars are a good choice for "true marine" stereos and speakers, but they're pricey also and not as easily found. I almost bought a Poly Planar HU for my Rhino -- and looking back I wish I had, rather than the Clarion marine unit I bought. That, or just gone with an amp and no HU...

I got lucky (maybe) and snagged a Fusion ipod head unit as a display model off of fleabay for $35 with all wiring except the ipod cradles. I've got to order them for about $35, but wanted to wire it all up first before I blow more $$$. So far I've got
30$ box 70$ head unit (when complete) and whatever my cost for speakers will be. I still haven't figured out how to mount the 6x9 and they may have to wait for a bit. I'm going to mount the box to two 1 inch aluminum tubes under the cage running the depth of the cage so I can mount the back speakers to the same bars and can run it without the top. Here is a link to the box on fleabay. I bought two with the idea of mounting them facing each other...6's in front and 6x9 in back but no room to access the head unit and the handle on the cage bar in the teryx gets in the way.
I never thought I'd see the day when it's easier to make a quick vid and post it than pics, but here we are...sorry if I sound weird. I hate talking on camera. Any ideas would be appreciated!

youtube is a great thing. do you think mounting it that will make it sit down to low? will it fit up between the to roll bars and bolt to the roof?(more of on mine, I know you want to have the roof off) but that might make the radio sit to far to the back of the car huh?
the way you going to mount it, how many inches will it sit below the roll cage bar?
