PostSubject: enclosed trailer   enclosed trailer EmptyTue Jun 03, 2008 10:04 pm

I have posted this info about my home built toyhauler out of an enclosed trailer on other forums and recieved a lot of positive feedback so I thought I would put it here too. Its a 24' enclosed and I have it just the way I want it, insulated walls and ceiling, fold down beds with real mattresses, turn into one king size if my wife goes or two beds if a buddy goes along, enough room to put up two cots if needed. I have had four in here and we were very comfortable still. It has the flat screen TV/DVD, cable connection, toilet, shower, sink, microwave, AC, Heat, 30 gal water tank, cabinets, stereo, fold down table, wired for 110 and 12 volt with a fuse pannel, awning and probably a few other things I forgot about.

I like it because it still has full functioning as an enclosed trailer but I can set it up to camp out of in 5 minutes. I looked at the toyhaulers but never saw anything I liked for under 25K, I have about 7 in this plus a lot of hours.

Here are some pics

Wow, that is NICE! I am curious about the beds. How do they fold down and what exactly is the set up of the bases of the beds?

The beds are framed with 2x4 and 3/4 plywood. On the wall side I used a piece of angel iron and welded gate hinges to it and attached those to the walls (I added support where the beds would go while I had it stripped doing insulation, you can see in some of the pics) By using the gate hinges it gave me enough room to add a 5" foam mattress. It just folds up on the hinges and fastens to the wall by 2 D rings and a hook like what is on a leash.

I have to be honest it really wasn't all that hard to do. Lots of time an planning. I have basic home repair skills but nothing specific.

Here is the first enclosed I did, it was a small 6x10 and very basic.

https://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b136/TTB2000/Daryl%20J/Trailer/

Here is a 6x12 that belongs to a friend. He and I did this one this spring.

https://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b136/TTB2000/Drew%20600%20Sportsman/01%20CAR%20MATE%20enclosed/

we added a sink to the cabinet under the microwave too. You can sort of see it in the one pic looking in the side door with the little 50 and generator sitting in front of it.

I have seen Neuromax's enclosed and it is very nice. My wife even made that comment when she saw it at the Christmas Parade last year. He's got a nice play to stay when he rides! cheers

Wow this is some nice pics of trailers...I too have an enclosed trailer and use it for camping too. Not near as fancy as these but sure takes care of our needs. We use the Cabelas XL cots to sleep on and put up after we arrive to our destination....roll out the carpet....tan not red (lol)... and then has shelves on one side to help keep us organized.

They have some push lights at Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart that are nice that work on a timer... They are on the walls close to where we put the cots to sleep so its an easy way to shut off the lights. I also found a Black and Decker cabinet on clearance at Lowes and bought it real cheap.... Its at the Vnose and use it to store camping supplies and clothes. Vnose is real nice but makes it where the cabinets dont work as well as in some of these pics.

Im curious about the tongue weight with the cabinets at the very front and what kind of truck u use to pull the rig?

Our next investment is going to be a Coleman Water On Demand water heater and portable potty... We always primitive camped before the enclosed and now we feel like we are uptown. We can use the A/C unit with generator or electric hookups and it also has a heat strip for the winter. We also have the Mr Buddy propane heater for the winter to use if we dont have a power source to hook up too. We have a whole in the floor to run the hose from the propane tank to the heater to have more moving around room inside the trailer.

We also have screens at the back door and the side door. Those have been used twice so far and worked great. When its nice enough to leave the doors open but to keep the bugs out. Use velcro strips and it clings to the inside through the screen and use then strips of wood to velcro to the top and keep weight down at the bottom of the screen. The back has an opening in the middle to overlap to enter and exit through without having to unvelcro to get out.

We roll the carpet up when we load the atvs.... once we get home we bring out the vaccum cleaner and suck up all the dust and grit we cant get up with the broom. Another cheap addition is rope lights... we use those on the outside for outside lights and it doesnt draw that much electricity and doesnt seem to draw bugs like lanterns and other camping lights. Eventually I hope to get an awning mounted on the side. Its amazing how much u can learn of neat thigns to do by seeing what others have come up with with their trailers.

No clue what the tongue weight is but I know its not too bad, its the equivalent of apx 3 sheets of plywood. In the cabinets is mostly sleeping bags, pillows, etc. I pull it with a Dodge 3500.

I would think the 3 sheets of plywood wouldnt weigh any more then the kind of stuff I have stored in the vnose of mine.
I have tried to distribute the weight throughout the trailer and not just load one side or end more then the other.
Other folks I have talked to says the outside cooler makes a big difference too... the darker the color the hotter they get in the summer.

A problem I ran into when I broke my foot and rented a rhino, was the rhino was just a little bit too tall to go through the door.... we had to let out the air and a couple of us get into the rhino to make it sit down low enough to go through the door. Once inside it was fine. I had picked the rhino up on a open trailer and took it back with my enclosed. Talk about stressing trying to figure out how to get that baby back!
