| I need to retap my skid holes the bolts that came suck but if I can would re-tap the holes OR I was wondering if a 1/4x20 bolt will fit throught the funky washer dealies that you need or will they need to be drilled? | |

| The holes on mine are .277 so .027 over .250. They will fit. But I will make a recommedation. Go with a 1/4 -28 fine thread. That should give you a lil more holding power with the small amount of ID thread per inch I would say you need all the TPI you can get. | |

| Chris, you are right course threads are deeper. Thread depth for 1/4 20 is .205. For 1/4 28 its .220. So course minimum pitch for 1/4 20 is .0.0075 per side deeper. These are estimated depths, using a set of calipers, and will vary from bolt to bolt.
However, a fine threads have more surface area in contact, and in this application will give more reliable holding power. Thats exactly why Yama uses fine threads on the skid plates, and other areas. There are plenty of applications where course is better, Aluminum, softer stainless, using two different types of metal, and many others. But, in this case, mild steel to mild steel is the perfect application for fine threads. It also provides less opprotunity for the fastner to vibrate loose. It wouldnt hurt to apply some of the Blue Loctite, (removable strenth) to the bolts.
Now if you what something stronger than either of these two can provide, use a helicoil thread kit. | |

| Dave , i agree there is more srface coverage. i just always found. that course threaded bolts hold better is high stress situations. and fine thread strips much easier. in prosition work fine thread is fine. but in high strength. i had better luck with course.... | |
