Progressive rate springs are good for high speed riding, but are a disadvantage in slow crawling. Guess it depends on what you want to do.

Killer I dont see where these guys claim these shocks are "progessive rate" springs.....but the maufactuer is Progressive Suspension. This is a whole shock including the shock body. Do you think I should assume these are considered "progressive rate". All the shock info out there is confusing the hell out of me. Can you explain why a progressive spring would not be good for slow speeds....or crawling? Thanks for the info.

http://www.tuninglinx.com/html/suspension-springs.html

Here is a good link. But basically not all the coils are spaced equally, so the more pressure you apply to the spring, the more it pushes back. This increases the rebound of the spring, which helps you in high speed bumps and keeps you from bottoming out on jumps. However, it limits the ability to fully compress the spring when slow crawling over large obstacles.

And the spring in the video is definately progressive rate.

I used to work in a place that had a sign that said

"Good fast, or cheap....choose 2"

Versatility is expensive, but basically you want maximum suspension travel with the ability to adjust the compression and rebound to the terrain your in.

And don't forget that added suspension travel adds heat. Thats why a lot of aftermarket coilovers have remote resivors.

I have seen the SE shocks for sale on several forums but they seem to be pricy for used shocks and compared to new aftermarket ones, from what I have read. Spending that much $ I dont think it would be worth the risk to me. You ever experienced bottoming out with the SE's?

I just received a set of Progressive 425 shocks from Hunterworks this afternoon. I will install them tomorrow and see what kind of difference they make. I took the Rhino out with the stock shocks and ran it across the cornfield behind my house. The stock suspension gets beat up badly when you run across the ruts at about 25 to 30 MPH. I also drove across several parking stops down the street at a sports park. We should see how the new shocks compare. I will say, the 425's look very beefy and are very heavy duty. I was surprised how heavy duty they look compared to the stock shocks. Hunterworks video didn't seem to show that big a difference between the two. We will see how they do tomorrow.

I'm watching this one closely to see the opinions. I'm curious how they'll perform on tight trails at moderate and slow speeds. I'm sure they'll do well at faster speeds.

For now, I've decided to just try the EPI springs on the stock shocks as a less expensive alternative. This has worked well for me on my Grizzly and a friend on his Can Am. I'm mostly trying to curb the bottoming out of the suspension. I'll try and post my findings although it may be a while. I have a 3 week old boy at home that is keeping me from riding as often.

Has anyone else tried springs only?

My review on the Progressive 425's:

Front Shocks are super! No bottoming and a great ride.

I am disappointed at the Progressive 425 rear shocks ride height. The springs are way too weak. Great ride but Low. I called Hunterworks when I receieved the rears and Todd could not quote the Heavy Duty spring rates. I found them tonight and was shocked -- they are only 225/450 springs. The std duty shows 225/400. That explains the ride height. Stock Yamahas are around 250/400. The EPI heavy duty springs are 325/800!! Guess I'm ditching the 425's on the rear and ordering the EPI rear spings to replace the springs on the spare set of new rear shocks (off of 2007 Rhino 660) I have sitting in the garage.

I am slightly disappointed in Progressive on this one.... The Heavy Duty is not really Heavy Duty...

But from looking at your aviater , you have the full cage in
the back and the back set , is this correct. so you are carrying
alot more weight than a regular rhino . maybe thay would work good
on a 2 seat rhino..... allright

My Rhino has a 4 seat cage (Rock Hard ATV weighs approx 100 lbs) with 2 Yamaha rear seats (70 lbs) and my two kids in back (60 lbs and 75 lbs). This added a total of around 300 lbs to my stock Rhino when loaded. The total weight gain is not much more than that since I no longer carry my chainsaw, cooler, or toolbox (the 4seat configuration left little carrying space for other stuff).

The EPI heavy duty springs are 325/800. I would not call 225/450 Heavy Duty by any means. Hunterworks says " Increased Ride Height" and I really doubt the rears would do that stock. The 225 # is too low to increase the ride height.

Todd's reco was to increase the preload (tighten the spring). I did that but that did little since the threaded part is not tall enough to fully compress the 225 part of the spring.

I did not mention my thoughts on the 425's to knock Hunterworks. My only issue is that the rear Hevy Duty 425's are not what I would call Heavy Duty. I would hate to see anyone else waste the $350 on the rears expecting a stronger spring. The shock part is probably fine but I will never know due to the weak spring (compared to what others call Heavy Duty).
