| Haha to his credit the starter was bad also I just got it tested again and its shot. Ive gotta be the luckiest guy around blowing my starter and motor in the same run. Still waiting on a phone call from the shop to tell me whats goin on. They've been tearing down and testing the past 2 days not sure if thats a good thing or bad thing. | |

| well.... my piston isn't cracked, its BROKEN.... New guy thats working on it today cause its my guys day off has told me so far he said all the top end is gonna have to be rebuilt but here is the kicker. He can supposedly see shards of metal down in the bottom end of the motor... So he says they have to pull the whole motor and even see if they can rebuild it or maybe just have to buy a new motor. This is bad, this is bad bad. What should I do? because im not gonna blow 1000s on just rebuilding a motor. | |

| I saw that.. either way its still 2500 bucks. Im still not sure what to do. Sloans will not buy it from me in the shape that it is now and the only salvage guy i could find would only offer me 3000 for it. Its gonna cost me 2500 from sloans to tear the motor out and repair it and even then thats if it is repairable. As of right now my tab is sittin at 500 just for the tear down and thats if i take it back right now as is. Im thinkin about taking it back and just parting it out. I honestly don't know what to do..... | |

| Bring it home, tear the motor out of it and tear it down. Then you will see what you got. You may be already out $3000. No need to make it $6000. | |

| You guys are jumping to conclusion without even really knowing what is wrong. I do not think the motor is bad, there is a way to filter the metal shards out of the drain plug. That is, if the shards of metal are small enough.....Then all we would have to do is do the 720 upgrade. Something is telling me that it dropped a valve, and that is what caused the piston to crack..and that is what the metal shards came from. | |

| all my valves are ok my cylinder is cracked and if it cracked im imagining there are chunks of it down in the bottom. Some new options however. Talked to I believe it was gofastinc who has told me if i can get the motor on a pallet he will get it shipped to him in cali and rebuild to 686 stroked with crank and piston and all the fixins, basically a fully built motor and shipped back to me for 3000. Still 3000 but an option. Either way im gonna cut my losses and pick it up tomorrow then decide to sell or its gonna get mothballed in the shop untill i can scratch together 3 extra grand. Don't be suprised if the broken rhino is sharing room on the trailer with a brand new laser red S that im gonna discuss with sales tomorrow on the way home.... | |

| I am still scratching my head on how it cracked?????? MB, ask about a 720/727 motor instead of a 686. | |

| Broken and cracked are VERY different situations. The piston being broke seems to imply that something seized or spun. Is the piston broken or the rod? A cracked piston would be less likely to drop shavings into the bottom end and IMO might be worth only a fresh top end. Since it broke I cant imagine that the bottom didnt get damaged. Its also highly possible that the shavings are from the bottom end. I dont think the previous opinions are "jumping to conclusions", they are just that opinions.
No way I would take a chance on filtering metal when you cant be 100% sure you got it all. Your going to have to crack the case....plain and simple.

| All the flakes in the bottom-end = all new bearings in the bottom and a case-split. If you just patch it with a new top-end, sell it....or trade it. It won't last long.
I'd agree with Gunny, cut your losses and chalk it up.

| Im really feeling a change... I love my rhino it was my first SXS and i have spent more time wrenching and modding it than i can remember!! Ive grown attached to it like its a freggin kid. That being said there have been things that have gone wrong with mine since day one that aren't suppose to go bad and it was a great learning experience but at the same time I think its time to start with a new slate. Im not saying ive made my mind up yet but it aint lookin good for ole red............ Especially considering they have the RZR S version of my rhino in stock at the dealership. Got work early tomorrow then im gettin off early and goin to pick her up and talk some business ill let yall know the outcome tomorrow night.... | |

| Here is a thread where we rebuilt our buddies 660. Not sure exactly what went wrong sounds something like what happened to you. Piston in pieces but it tore the head and valves up. Also the rod was slightly bent so he went with a stroker crank and big bore to clean up the cylinder. You can rebuild it yourself not really need any super special tools, but you will have to split the case and get all the debris out you will be surprised how much got sucked up into the oil screen that we had to scape out. https://southernsxsriders.forumakers.com/t4514-660-engine-failure?highlight=Engine | |
