| I know less than nothing about Ford trucks. Never owned one. Pal has a new 2011 1/2 crew cab, 2 wheel drive, rides like a dream. He has a 12 or 14 foot trailer upon which he plans to haul a tractor of about 5,000. Between trailer and tractor he will gross about 6,500 to 7,000 to tow. Will that half ton do it okay and will he need a load equalizing hitch with the bars like a Reese? Dual axle trailer with brakes on both axles. Thanks for any help ya'll might offer. | |

| Yes it will do the trick.....he will need to load it correctly.....not to much in the back and not to much in the front....let the trailer carry the weight. He will need to have 200 lbs on the tongue. Tandem axle with brakes on all 4 is super. He WILL NOT need an equalizing hitch...waist of time and money. Just LOAD the TRAILER CORRECTLY
I use to haul a skid steer on a small equipment trailer...tandem, surge brakes, with an S10 Chevy......just load the trailer correctly.
Hope this helps and that I got my point across. | |

| I agree....Loading correctly is EVERYTRHING. However I come from the school of 'Always have more truck than you need when you're towing'. It'll tow it ok. Might be hard on the brakes tho. | |

| Being that your friend has a tandem axle trailer, I would load the tractor just a little ahead of center over the tandem. Woody, when he is driving it up on the trailer, watch what the trailer does as the tractor is coming up the ramps...as it goes up the ramps it will be lifting the nose of the trailer....as it moves forward you will see the nose coming back down.... when both axles of the tractor are on the trailer, the trailer will be level again....as he drives forward the nose of the trailer will now start to descend....if he keeps moving the tractor forward it will start to look like the trailer is making the front of the pick up come up. He has gone to far. You want to see just a little down on the nose....and it does not take much weight, froward of center of the tandem, to put 200 lbs on the nose (tongue).
Best explanation of this is, think of the trailer as a te-ter-ta-ter..... the axles are the center post, the trailer is the board, and the tractor is the people on the board.
