| Congats, I think its the best rank in the service. I never went any further so I guess I shouldn't be too critical but from major on up you get to far removed from the troops. Never forget its God, Country and your men. Semper fi | |

| Six years in the USN here, volunteered, had my 18th birthday in Boot Camp and served from '75-'81. Spent time on what was then "The Most Powerful Guided Missile Cruiser in the World", USS Chicago (CG-11), flagship for the Seventh Fleet in the West Pacific and test bed for the new Naval Tactical Data Systems that evolved into and are now known as the Aegis system. Was a Data Systems Technician responsible for support and maintenance of the system. | |

| My brother served in the Marines right out of high school for about 5 years. He was due to get out in 4 years at the time, but was called into war, & spent a year overseas fighting the war. He got out for about a year, joined the Army....went to war again....came back & talked about how he almost was killed...the desert winds where really bad out there...his face was all burnt, peeling, e.t.c. he looked terrible....he came out after his term of 2 years, then went into the national guard for a few months, then switched out & is now back in the Army...he is stationed at FT. Stewart in GA...he is currently in CA taking training in the desert to get ready to ship back out to war for the 3rd time....which my mother & I are not very happy about....bunch of BS.....my mom has tried to get him out of it, but you know how that is. I am already worried, & tear up thinking about it & he hasn't left yet....please keep him in your prayers, & that he stays safe while over there. He gets to come home next month for a few weeks before he ships....I am really devastated....this stupid war should be over with. | |

| God bless your brother for his service and you and your family for your sacrifices Dirt Chic. Going through the stresses of 3 tours has got to be overwhelming for the family.
I am going to Ft Benning, Ga on May 6th to watch my youngest son graduate from Basic training. You never want to see a loved one have to be in harms way. But when it's necessary for our country to have to send them, i'm grateful for people like your brother, my son, and all the other members of the military that say, "Send Me." | |

| Best advice I can give is guide your son with the same Fatherly advice you would give if he chose any other career; what does he want; separate the call of duty (that is a given) from the future he expects, then chose a MOS that meets this. If he wants to be a Tech of some kind then go into this after service chose wisely considering the education they offer, if he feels he wants to be a "lifer" then the door is wide open to anything he wants to be Military wise. Make this decision up front, now. Also do not trust Recruiters completely some are "used car salesmen" (personal experience) you owe it to your son to do your own research. Remember don't be shy, ask questions, seek advice; all servicemen/women earn the benefits they receive and more. Service is a great thing, the feeling of Honor, discipline and the education is priceless. Good Luck and Thank You and your Son! | |

| Served in the Army from 1969-1973....MOS,(Job) was ground radar, but went on to jump school..so not many radars were dropped from planes. Attened Ranger School in the States, and the Belgium Commando school in Belgium. Never set foot in Nam...but was next door for 6-8 months in Cambodia when we were not supposed to be there, with a team of Green Berets, and some folks from Langly, VA...seemed like the same jungle and hills as all of South East Asia to me. Rank. Sgt. E-5 Was going to re-enlist for Physician Assistant School for 6 more years...but never could get them to put it on paper. To all that have served..serve this day..and will serve. "THANKS AND GOD BLESS" | |

| No service, Like others above I went to enlist in the corps '72. Physical deferment (broken knee). Don't go to the enlistment office on crutches! Though, I am very proud of my personal military heritage- Father/ Army E5 served in pacific theatre WWII. 3 Brz stars. Fathers Father/ Army served in WWI in France & Belgium. Suffered gas damage. I am an honorary member of our local marine corps league for some voluntary art work I did for them.
I thank God for every person who has ever helped protect my freedom and privleges. I hope I never embarass or disrespect/abuse those high priced priveleges as some seem to do repeatedly...
