trailer tires

i had a blowout on my toyhauler coming back from trails end.





so im looking at replacing all the tires. 225-75-15

whats the best tires to go with?
was thinking of going with LT tires but not finding many to pick from in the factory size.

You need a trailer specific tire, LT tires are not rated for the loads a trailer puts on the tire. I get my trailer tires are Northern Tool, reasonable priced for a decent tire.

Are you turning in the damage on your insurance? if so let them pay for the tire also...

I switched them on mine and went with the 10 ply instead of the 6 ply that came on it.

Don't forget, trailer rated tires (ST's) are only speed rated to 65 MPH. Lots of folks forget that and go through a bunch of tires.

I went with the Maxxis M8008 E (80psi) rated on the new trailer.  Best pic on a lot of the RV Forums and other sites.  No China tires.  Stay away from price only.  I run the Doran Tire Pressure Monitor System on the truck and trailer.  Lets me know the running PSI and alarms when they start to go low or high(wheel bearing or brake sticking problem).

What brand did you have on the trailer?

Like everyone else said.......Maxxis I changed those China bombs right away after I got my Fifth wheel and will stick with them. If you go LT you will have to bump up a wheel size.

I too thought that GoodYear Marathons would be about as good as a guy could get. I paid a lot of dough to have my dealer order me in five of them. ( He didn't have them in stock). They came in and the bastards were MADE IN CHINA! Goodyears! Boy was I upset.

Check Amazon. I just bought some new tires for my new toy hauler before the maiden voyage with it next month as I didn't want to risk the china bombs. Amazon had the best price for my findings with free shipping. I am not a Prime member but they came 1.5 days later to my house.

I like to buy local to see the manufacture dates on them. Maxxis are easy to make out the dates.

checked with a local company yesterday on tires and ordered a set of the maxxis for 113 each.   

Trailer will even pull better!

That doesn't sound like a bad price. Is that the initial quote or were they matching a competitor? And does that include mounting, balancing, and new valve stems?

its a business that i get to do all the work on my police car. its initial quote only place i checked with local. cheapest i could find online was amazon around 140$.

I found them for $131 mount and installed   

I run 17.5" wheels and Cooper Roadmaster R160 tires.  These tires are rated at 75 MPH and they will each carry 4300 LBS each.  I have had them for two years and have run them up to 600 miles in a day and temperatures in excess of 100 degrees in New Mexico.   No Problem.

With triple axels on the Voltage toyhauler, this is a little overkill but I did not want to be worring about blowouts or be restricted to 65 MPH.

I am told that there are more trailer tire choices with the 17.5" wheels.

That is what I found out Ray, about 17.5's. I had good, new, 16" wheels on the XLR. That is why Goodyear makes the G614's. It is a 110psi, 14 ply rated tire. If you have a 5th wheel with the factory tires, you are probably going to have them blow at sometime before you get much wear on them, especially if they are only E-rated. I am glad I had the Doran tire pressure monitor system when mine started loosing air. No blow out. That way I had something (  ) to send back to the manufacture. If you shred the tire they will tell you that you ran it low on psi. DUH, that is what happened when the inner belts came apart and punctured the tread. Pressure went low. They will not warranty if they can't look at a complete tire. What they gave me was 1/2 of what a new replacement would cost. The tire had about 3,000 miles on it.

If you go with a higher PSI tire than what came on the trailer you will have to check and make sure the wheel is rated for the higher PSI. Most OEM 16" wheels will not be rated above 80 PSI I think the rating for the wheel is on the inside, therefore you will have to take the tire off the wheel to see the rating for the wheel.
Gimpy, you are right, the tire monitoring system is the way to go on any RV.

my 15inch wheels are 80 psi. on backside of wheel.

My XLR had 16" wheels that had the 110PSI stamp on the spokes on the back side of the wheels. I got lucky. If they were only 80PSI rated, I would have bought 17.5" wheels.
