| Simple answer -- it pulls in twice as much cable to move the same distance, so it doubles the pull on the snatchblock...
A 3000 lb winch will put 3000 lb of pull on each side of that snatchblock pulley, totalling 6,000 lb.

| they say that but ......its not actually double.all the snatch block does is take more cable off the spool and sometimes help u get the right angle u need.
simple.....the less cable on the spool.....the less the winch has to work harder to turn it around.

| I always thought you had more power with MORE cable on the hub, i.e. closer to the object. It lowers the ratio due to the size of the spool, just like sprockets and a chain. Maybe I'm wrong. Anytime I've winched it just seemed the winch had more power with a shorter cable?? I claim to be no expert tho. | |

| You have more power closer to the hub, but higher speed on the outside layer...
The closer to the hub, the easier it is for the motor to turn the hub, so the motor can generate more power on the cable...
It's kinda deceiving, because if the winch has plenty of power for what you're doing, you'll get faster results with the short cable. So, it seems real powerful...
It just doesn't have the "grunt" on the outside layer that it has down closer to the hub.
CAUTION: I don't claim to be an expert either, but you also want to always make sure that you have one layer if possible (a half dozens rounds, as a minimum) on the spool, or you risk pulling the cable out of the spool. The cable needs that friction of the first layer to help hold it on the spool.

| Good winch info guys. I'm going to experiment with the snatch-block this week sometimes on a downed-tree in the river, that with a single-line, I can't move. | |

| i ve seen this topic several times before....see if i can remember where....they had some real good links with the info on this.seems like it was 1.5 more pulling power ,rather than double..... | |

| It is the same concept as lifting. Go out side and try to lift a 100 lb block. Then add one pulley above head and attach a rope to the block and pull through the pulley. For every pulley the block gets easier to lift. Here is a good explanation..... http://www.the-office.com/summerlift/pulleybasics.htm | |

| I have never had to use a snatch block! My winch has always pulled my rhino but I have always used a bigger winch.. I locked my brakes down a few weeks ago and hooked to a buried ford ranger the other day to see if my 4000lbs KFI would bog but it did not it just kept pulling my rhino and digging ruts where the tires were locked. It took a ford full size bronco and an f250 4 door to pull the ranger out....
I do agree that the less cable you have on the spool the more pulling power you have due to the more cable you have on the spool the higher geared it is... This is the reason I always recommend a wide spool so you stay at max pulling power for a greater amount of time..
Think of a sport bike or dirt bike change the front sprocket from 14 to 15 tooth and loose lowend power while gaining top end speed... Each layer you add to the winch it does similar to going up one tooth on the sprocket...
A 4000lbs warn is rated at 2600 on the forth layer (I think). I think some regular spool winches come with 50+ ft of cable and have a total of 5 and 6 layers which makes them extremely weak in comparison to what they are rated on the first layer..

I contacted Twisted Stitch and they advised me not to replace my stock one with theirs because it causes the driver to set at an angle and is not comfortable. He said that they are in the process of designing something different and hoped to have it out by years end.

| Wow almost 10k views!!! Wish I had more to add, but honestly, the machines where I like it at this time. Although I did poke a hole in the radiator backing-up in some rather deep water and the fan came on. One of the blades flexed forward enough to poke a hole in the radiator. 45.00 later. Fixed!! | |
